​San Francisco’s “A Mind Is…” Gala Raises More than Half a Million Dollars for Area Students

On February 23, 2019, UNCF San Francisco Office held its annual signature “A Mind Is…” Gala at the San Francisco Hyatt Regency Embarcadero. This was the biggest “A Mind Is…” Gala ever held in San Francisco. Over 1,000 generous individuals came together to help raise over $525,000.

Rick Kopf, UNCF Leadership Council Chairman; Lakecia Gunter, VP of Ecosystem Development and Operations, Programmable Solutions Group, Intel Corp.; Monica Sudduth, Regional Dev. Dir, UNCF Western Region; and Maurice Jenkins, EVP of UNCF. Ms. Gunter received the Corporation of the Year Award on behalf of Intel.

In partnership with Coalition of Black Excellence, UNCF acknowledged several corporate and community partners, and celebrated the extraordinary African Americans who exemplified a standard of excellence. Honorees of the evening were Dr. Doris “Lucki” Allen, U.S. Armed Forced Military Intelligence Corps Hall of Fame Inductee, and Tuskegee University alum; and Breeanna Lane, Oracle Community Impact Grant Recipient, and Oakwood University senior. Intel received the Corporation of the Year award.

Musiq Soulchild serenaded the audience of more than 1,000 partygoers.

The evening was hosted by KPIX CBS 5 reporter Christin Ayers, and actor and filmmaker, Allen Maldonado, and featured a formal dinner, live auction, and entertainment by Musiq Soulchild, Steve Carter Trio, and The Soul Rebel DJs.

Other companies who gave to and supported the UNCF San Francisco office this year include: Chevron, Blue World Travel, Dignity Health, Wells Fargo, and Union Bank, among many others.

This year, UNCF celebrates 75 years of support for the nation’s historically black colleges and the 60,000 students who benefit from UNCF. This year also marked the Inaugural year of the UNCF/Northern California Endowment Campaign, with Chevron providing the lead corporate gift. The Endowment Campaign is a great way to support current and matriculating students, and ensure future students will have a reservoir of funds to draw upon once they reach time to attend college. All donors to the Endowment Campaign will be listed in perpetuity as a legacy donor.
