New York Returning to Our Roots Community Leaders Breakfast

The Abyssinian Baptist Church hosted the UNCF 75th anniversary “Returning to Our Roots” Community Leaders Breakfast, April 26, to commemorate the historical prominence churches and community trailblazers have played in the foundational and ongoing support of UNCF and HBCUs.

Austin Easterling, Morehouse College alum, spoke on the significant impact UNCF made on his life. “When I think back on my life, all I ever wanted was opportunity. The opportunity to achieve more. The opportunity to make a difference. The opportunity to be put in a position to succeed. The opportunity to change lives and ensure no mind is left wasted. UNCF not only believed in me but provided me with that opportunity.”

While attending Morehouse College, Easterling founded a charity initiative, The College Charity Run, to raise over $10,000 and bring awareness about issues affecting people of color. UNCF’s impact continues to inspire communities to light the way for better futures.

UNCF New York proudly honored Harlem Hospital CEO, Eboné Carrington with the Trailblazer Award and Rev. Jeffrey S. Thompson, Amity Baptist Church, Rev. Naomi Tyler-Lloyd, Trinity Baptist Church and Rev. Brian D. Scott, Union Baptist Church with the Keeper of the Flame Award.

UNCF celebrated its 75th anniversary just a few days ago in the Big Apple. While always a significant player in the organization’s fundraising efforts, New York City has also had a unique tie to UNCF—75 years ago, the organization was founded and incorporated there with the help of many noted business leaders and philanthropists of the time. The March 21 event honoring supportive New York corporations and philanthropists, including long time UNCF advocate and education change-maker former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, raised more than a half a million dollars to invest in UNCF’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and the deserving students that attend them. >> Read More
