How Do You Follow the Country’s Best UNCF Walk for Education?

How do you top success? How can Detroiters who want to support UNCF’s 37 member-institutions and their 50,000 students follow the country’s best UNCF Walk for Education?

It won’t be easy. This year’s UNCF Detroit Walk for Education was the best in the country. It attracted 550 walkers (despite thunderstorms) and raised more than $125,000 in sponsorships, including support from returning $30,000 sponsors Ford Motor Company, and Delta Air Lines, for a total of more than $682,000. Longtime volunteers returned to invest their hard work and dedication in making the Walk a success: Alpha Phi Alpha’s Gamma Lambda Chapter staffed the Walk’s four rest stops and helped with setup and cleanup for the tenth years, and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Tau Alpha Omega Chapter managed the parking lots for the fourth year—to name just two of many.

All on top of an expanded schedule of additional activities that raised more money to send students to and through college by holding bake sales, golf outings, a white party and concert at Chene Park.

Why try to exceed that performance? Because around the Detroit area and across Michigan, thousands of Detroit and Michigan students look to UNCF for the education assistance they need and that we as a community need them to have. Almost 900 Michigan students attend one of UNCF’s 37 member HBCUs, all of which receive financial support from UNCF Detroit’s Walk for Education and other UNCF special events. Michigan students receive over $2 million in UNCF scholarships, almost $800,000 of which are awarded to students from Detroit.

But our students need and deserve more, as do Michigan employers that depend on diverse, college-educated employees. More UNCF scholarships—because for every scholarship UNCF awards, it must turn away 9 qualified applicants. And more support for UNCF HBCUs, which offer higher graduation rates and lower average tuition than other kinds of colleges serving students from comparable backgrounds. And that means they need an even more successful UNCF Detroit Walk for Education.

So who can follow that? Only a combination of present and new Walk for Education supporters—present and new walkers, sponsors and volunteers. Present and new investors in better futures for our students, and through their success, for all of us, investors who watch this space and sign up for the next edition country’s best Walk, the next UNCF Detroit Walk for Education.
