UNCF President Dr. Michael L. Lomax Honored by 100 Black Men of Long Beach, Inc., for His Commitment to Education

UNCF President and CEO Will Receive the President Award for Man of the Year at Benefit Awards Gala

Long Beach, CA (May 4, 2013) - UNCF (United Negro College Fund), the nation's largest and most effective minority education organization, is honored to announce that its president, Michael L. Lomax will receive 100 Black Men of Long Beach, Inc.'s, President Award for Man of the Year. Dr. Lomax is receiving the award in honor of his longstanding commitment to ensuring that African American and other students of color receive the tools and support they need to get to and through college.

"I am deeply honored by this award," said Lomax, "because I know that it represents strong vote of confidence in UNCF and the work we are doing to increase the number of African Americans with college degrees. Today, more than ever, we must work to ensure our young people are receiving the education they need to help them assume their places as leaders in the 21st century." said Lomax. "100 Black Men is at the forefront of this effort, and we look forward to continue to work with them to build a college-going culture in the African American community and ensure that our students are getting the education they need, and that we need them to have."

Dr. Lomax will receive the President Award for Man of the Year at 100 Black Men of Long Beach, Inc.'s, fifth annual Benefit Awards Gala, "The Man In The Mirror," at the Westin Hotel in Long Beach, CA.

After an academic career that included teaching literature at UNCF members Morehouse and Spelman colleges in Atlanta and serving as president of Dillard University in New Orleans, also a UNCF member institution, Dr. Lomax joined his passions for public service and education, becoming president of UNCF in 2004. Under his leadership, the organization has raised $1.5 billion and helped more than 92,000 students graduate from college and launch careers.

Under Dr. Lomax's leadership, UNCF is launching a new iteration of its "A mind is a terrible thing to waste"®: public service announcement campaign. Since its debut in 1972, the "A mind is" campaign has raised more than $3.5 billion dollars and helped more than 300,000 students earn college degrees at UNCF member HBCUs and with UNCF scholarships. The latest campaign is expected to be just as groundbreaking, framing support for UNCF and its students as investment in better futures for the next generation of that will pay dividends for them, their communities, and all of us in years to come.

Dr. Lomax also developed UNCF's Campaign for Emergency Student Aid (CESA.) Launched in 2009 in response to the recession, CESA has raised more than $18 million from more than 10,000 donors, and has awarded more than 8,000 education-saving CESA scholarships.

Today, UNCF supports more than 60,000 students at more than 900 colleges and universities, awarding more than 13,000 scholarships under more than 400 programs, including scholarship, internship and fellowship, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty development programs.
