Yene Fanta Minority Scholarship Project invites qualified applicants to participate in the first Annual Scholarship Contest that is administered by UNCF - United Negro College Fund UNCF.Yene Fanta Minority Scholarship is available to Ethiopian / Ethiopian-American high school seniors who plan to attend a four year accredited college or university commencing fall of 2013.

In addition, eligible applicants must:

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.50 on a 4 scale
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have unmet need as verified by the college or university financial aid office
  • Demonstrate scholastic achievement, leadership skills, and community involvement
  • Complete the online application describing extracurricular activities, honors and awards and community services
  • Submit a typed 500-750 word double-spaced essay. To learn more please go to the essay section of the application
  • Submit current official high school transcript and one letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with the their academic abilities.

Yene Fanta Minority Scholarships are presented in memory of Sister Fantaye Ashagre who was a strong proponent for educating youth and sacrificed tremendously to accomplish this focus in her life. Sister Fantaye Ashagre instilled so much good in her community that her children never knew how and when to thank her before she suddenly departed. She wore many hats successfully and gracefully, and now in honor and respect for her, her children promised to do their best to carry her legacy by establishing the Yene Fanta Minority Scholarship Program which is hoped will grow in the coming years.

Yene Fanta Minority Scholarship will provide three awards in the amounts of $2,500, $1,500 and $1,400.The selections will be made in March, 2013 and the scholarship awards will be disbursed to the selected students' institutions for credit to their accounts in the fall on 2013. If selected, students are required to submit letters of acceptance from their college or university.

This scholarship contest is a wonderful opportunity for college bound Ethiopian / Ethiopian-American high school seniors to help fund their educational aspirations.
