Research is an important part of both the academic and corporate environments, and minorities play a critical role in scientific advancement. Through its partnership with Merck, UNCF has funded more than 350 research fellowships to increase the exposure of minorities to research fields and to help researchers identify talented professionals who can lend their expertise to scientific and other research endeavors. UNCF fellows make a real contribution to the collective advancement of humanity through unique discoveries.
Exposure to research and development fellowships significantly increase a student or professional's ability to relate theoretical knowledge with hands-on activity. It enhances the entire learning atmosphere, as the experience is integrated into curricula or communicated among peers. It gives greater relevance to classroom instruction and ensures that the latest academic theory is transplanted into the research arena. It also increases the pool of those with doctoral degrees, who can then lend their expertise to classroom instruction.
