Spelman College

Spelman College, founded in 1881, is the nation’s oldest four-year liberal arts institution for black women. One of six institutions in the Atlanta University Center, Spelman consistently ranks among top liberal arts colleges in national publications that annually rank among America’s best colleges. Spelman College was the only HBCU ranked in the top 100 Best Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News & World Report in 2004. The Princeton Review named Spelman College the one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education in its 2003 edition. In addition to high academic standards, Spelman emphasizes the importance of community service. More than 50 percent of Spelman’s students are engaged in some form of community service, which resulted in the institution receiving the Points of Light Award from President Bush in 1991.
